Emergency Departments (EDs) generally provide care for critical and life-threatening conditions. ED Visits are categorized based on seriousness or severity level, e.g., mild, medium, or high.

99281 ED Visit – Mild Severity: An emergency department visit for the evaluation and management of a patient, which requires these 3 key components: A problem focused history; A problem focused examination; and Straightforward medical decision making.
99282 ED Visit – Mild Severity (expanded): An emergency department visit for the evaluation and management of a patient, which requires these 3 key components: An expanded problem focused history; An expanded problem focused examination; and medical decision making of low complexity
99283 ED Visit – Medium Severity (expanded): An emergency department visit for the evaluation and management of a patient, which requires these 3 key components: An expanded problem focused history; An expanded problem focused examination; and medical decision making of moderate complexity
99284 ED visit – Medium Severity (detailed): An emergency department visit for the evaluation and management of a patient, which requires these 3 key components: A detailed history; A detailed examination; and medical decision making of moderate complexity
99285 ED visit – High Severity: An emergency department visit for the evaluation and management of a patient, which requires these 3 key components: A comprehensive history; A comprehensive examination; and medical decision making of high complexity
