Average cost per day estimates reflect the total amount paid and number of days of drug supply for each claim, including amounts paid by the health plan and the patient (including copay, coinsurance, and deductible). The average cost per day for brand and generic drugs can be compared by drug category and payer type. See the Methodology page for more information.

Drug Categories

Drugs were identified by National Drug Code (NDC) and grouped into one of 51 US Pharmacopeia (USP) categories assigned based on the condition they treat.
